Security Technical Writer – Cyber & Risk Documentation

Step into a high-impact role where your words directly support Australia’s security posture. As a Technical Document Writer, you’ll translate complex security concepts into clear, usable guidance across policies, risk templates and user-facing material for a large Federal Government agency, ensuring documentation is accurate, compliant and easy to follow for diverse audiences.

Location: Canberra, ACT or Sydney, NSW
Contract Duration: 6-month contract from February 2026, with possible extensions
Security Clearance Requirement: TSPV essential
Closing Date: Friday 19 December 2025, 10:00am (Canberra time)

Essential Tasks:
  • Review, update and maintain security-related document suites including technical security policies, equipment guides, risk assessment templates and user-facing guidance.
  • Translate complex technical security and threat concepts into clear, plain-English content aligned with internal Plain Language and branding guidelines.
  • Work closely with security SMEs and policy stakeholders to gather information, coordinate self and peer reviews, and incorporate feedback through to final sign-off.
  • Store, organise and maintain documents in approved content-management systems with correct metadata, classification markings, audit trails and access controls.
Key Criteria:
  • Proven experience producing technical documentation for government or regulated environments, with a strong command of plain-language writing techniques.
  • Demonstrated understanding of government security concepts and frameworks (e.g. PSPF, ISM, ISO 31000 or similar).
  • High proficiency with MS Word, plus familiarity with document-management platforms such as SharePoint, Confluence and similar tools.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills, with the ability to extract detail from SMEs and present content clearly to non-technical audiences.
